406 No birth cert. issued. Still born. EAMER, Jeanette (I654)

407 No record of marriage of BERRY to EAMER in SA, but the births of all children are registered under James EAMER / Eliza BERRY.

It appears Eliza married a Daniel BALCOMB on 02.08.1881 (45 widow) at the residence of Mr Martinus in Port Pirie, following the death of James EAMER in 1868.

At James death the youngest Arthur was just 2yrs, Sarah Anne was 5yrs, Walter 8yrs and Alfred, the eldest 9yrs. Arthur died two months after his father leaving Eliza with 3 children between 5 and 9.

Eliza is recorded on her marriage certificate to Daniel BALCOMB as Eliza EMOUR. She became Eliza BALCOMB after this point.

It is interesting to note that Walter's death certificate records his mothers name as Ethel BALCOMB and his father as John EAMER.

It is also interesting that Walter's sister Sarah Anne was married 28.05.1888 (25yrs) at the residence of Mrs BALCOMB, Parkside, SA. Sarah was 18yrs when her mother remarried.

Eliza BALCOMB died 13.01.07 in Hospital, 69 yrs - last residence being Nailsworth, Adelaide SA

In the "Biographical Index Of South Australians - 1836 to 1855" [S.O.G Ref: Aua/ SA/ G10] on Page 118, top of page first column, is this reference:- "BERRY Andrew b: c1816 d: 9.1.1852 Adelaide Sa. arr. 1838 occ: Farmer, Clerk res: Adelaide, Burra rel: Prot. m: 27.12.1843 Glasgow LKS SCT Eliz Emma Helen nee: FORREST par: Mowbray STENHOUSE and Whma nee: FORREST b: c1817 Edinburgh MID SCT ch: John Andrew [1848]". Is this "our" Eliza[beth] BERRY. As Andrew died in January 1852 and the first child of James & Eliza[beth] was born 1859, it may well be.19.10 2004: See entry below from Jo HARRIS. Now we know Eliza[beth]'s father was John BERRY looked again at this book and again on Page 118 are listed several references to John BERRY's - is one of them Eliza's father!?

James received his Conditional Pardon in May 1856 and arrived South Australia June 1857 and he may well have met up with Eliza[beth] soon after his arrival. The couple did set up home in the Adelaide area. The marriage of Andrew & Eliz Emma took place in Scotland but differing information from two of our Australian cousins, inform me that she was either "a jolly red-headed Irish Nurse" or "a little red-headed English Nurse", conflicting reports, but either way I have not as yet been able to trace Eliza[beth] and neither have helpful researchers in Australia. Maud Thomas, who has written her family history for her family, was informed that James common-law-wife was Ethel BALCOMBE, this from another branch of the EAMER family, but having purchased myself the Birth & Death Certificates of Eliza[beth] and James's son Arthur and the Birth Certificate of son Walter, it shows that the mothers name was Eliza or Elizabeth formerly BERRY. I still wonder if James & Eliza[beth] did infact marry one another, especially as the Certificates state "formerly BERRY". It was known that these marriages did infact take place even though former wives or husbands may have been left in the homelands that convicts knew they would never return to. Researching so far has not revealed a marriage. [Entered 12.10.2001].

HOORAY!!! Met Jo HARRIS from Sydney, Australia at the S.O.G. on the 19th August 2004 - she was over in England for five months researching her F.H. - visiting R.O.'s and places where her ancestors lived. I spoke to her about my problem in finding information on Eliza and she said she would try and help. I sent her an E Mail on the 29th September when I knew she would be back in Australia. I received a reply on the 1st October - TWO days later with the most wonderful info on Eliza - so much info in such a short space of time, I was over the moon. This information I have now entered. Eliza was the daughter of John BERRY. The BALCOMBE has been solved - Eliza[beth] married a Daniel BALCOMB. [Entered 19.10.2004].

Marriage Cert. sent for from Australia. Registrar's date 1.11.2004 / Daniel BALCOMB = Eliza EAMOUR. [In Green Folder].

13/1/2006: Message on GenesReunited from Bill EDWARDS, Australia. [E Mail address: barned2@dodo.com.au]. Info re the Message I put on GenesReunited the day before asking for help with the BERRY lineage. Already have info he sent but gave me a Website to check for Convicts in Australia i.e. : www.genseek.net/cons.htm. I went on this excellent Website and found James EAMER & Henry NASH and printed off details [In EAMOUR File]. I looked for Eliza[beth] BERRY and on the VICTORIA INFO I found VPRS 10879 PO ALPHA INDEX TO CENTRAL REGISTER OF FEMALE PRISONERS [VA 1464] PENAL AND GAOLS BRANCH, CHIEF SECRETARY'S DEPARTMENT / Unit 1 [1857 - 1887] 218 Images - which are photostated from the actual Register and under the following Image 7 found this entry although the BEARY is suspect, the "R" could be "S"!:-BEARY Elizabeth Register No. 332 / No. of Register 1 / Page 332.The Register is in the Reading Rooms of the Public Record Office Victoria. Ref: VPRS 516/P1 Central Register Of Female Prisoners. As the entry is in Register 1 [started 1857] this well could be our Eliza[beth]!!14/1/2006: Another Message from Bill EDWARDS giving info on Sarah Ann EAMER [see under Sarah]. Sarah's daughter Myrtle was married at the Methodist MANSE Church in Alberton, Port Adelaide, S.A. - so was Eliza[beth] BERRY of Scottish descent and not Irish!! Manse in the dictionary states: "in Scotland, minister's house".

Alan was the only son of Arthur & Margaret.Letter dated 14 February 1995 received from Alan on the18 February 1995. [Filed in EAMER Large File toward back]. Alan was then living at :- 1 Tyers Road, Roleystone W.A. 6111, Western Australia [Phone No: [08] 9397 5270].Replied to his letter on the 20 February 1995 [Copy in EAMER Large File].NOTE:- Sent a bitter sweet letter which I regret sending now but was angry about some of the contents of his letter at the time and the fact that his cousin Robert EAMER had not replied to my letter sent to him asking for details of his family when Robert had received so much info from me and Shirley which without doubt his brother John had passed on to him - a passage in Alan's letter revealed this. [Entered 14.1.2004].
Marilyn DICKSON's letter dated 12.2.1995 informing me she had been in touch with Alan John - extract:- "I forgot to ask what his line of work is or whether he travels down from country hillside suburb of Roleystone, which is near the first tricklings of the Canning river that winds its way past our suburb of Waterford."
17.1.2004. Going into www.whitepages.com.au/wp/ on the Internet under W. A. Residential I found that Alan is still living at 1 Tyers Road, Roleystone 6111, W.A. and that his telephone number is listed as: [08] 9397 5270. The other intials listed with his are J.M. which I presume to be those of his wife and have entered her under J. M. [Unknown] on the Individual Chart. [See next para.]17.2.2006. F. Tree on John G. EAMER's Website gives wife as Debra Michelle - J.M. altered accordingly.

Alfred never married. He served in the First World War. The National Archives of Australia have details of Alfred's Service Records on their Website hhtp://www.naa.gov.au/the collection/family history/armed services/html [Note the spaces between "the collection" / "family history" / "armed services"].

Alfred served in the Army from 17.2.1916 until 12.7.1918. When he enlisted it was at Blackboy Hill, W.A. - his place of birth was stated as Quorn, S.A., his Mother Mary EAMER. When he Embarked for overseas service he sailed from Freemantle on the 16.5.1916 aboard HMAT Surada [Ship No. A52]. Alfred was a Private, Service Number 2343 and his Unit was the 10th Light Horse Regiment. When he left the Army he was a Lance Corporal and his Unit was the 3rd Imperial Camel Corps as his Discharge Record shows, he had been serving in Egypt.

It also shows that he was admitted on the 24.5.1917 to the 14th Australian General Hospital being a casualty of Neurasthenia [nervous debility] - I cannot quite make out from the record but I assume this was in Cario.

It appears from the Record that he was Released to return to Australia on the 12.7.1918. He sailed from Cairo to Port Darwin, Australia. He embarked on the 17.7.1918, sailed 20.7.1918. He was Discharged 5th M.D. on the 2.10.1918.

Although the Report printed off from the Website is difficult to read in some places it does have much info upon it. It shows that Alfred was awarded the Star Medal, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He is on the Australian War Memorial and is listed on the N.A.A. First World War Nominal Roll [File 15-064]. [5 Lists copied from the N.A.A. Website in the EAMOUR/EAMER Ring Binder File].

[Entered 6.2.2006].Looking again on the N.A.A. Website I found 15 pages of documents relating to Alfred's war service. One of the documents is titled "Statutory Declaration" dated the 27th Aug 1949 regarding his Discharge Certificate that is described as Lost: Destroyed by Fire ...."papers as been burnt". His address is given as Alice Springs. This is in reply to a letter he had sent on the 6th Aug 1919 asking for a replacement. He states that he had served in the Tenth Light Horse. D.O.B.: 15th Oct 1887 Quorn, S.A. Next of Kin: Mrs. W. EAMER, Mukatharra, W.A.On his Enlistment Document 8.1.1916 it states: Height 5' 8" / Weight 185lbs / Chest 39" / Complextion: Dark / Eyes: Grey / Hair: Brown / Of Presbyterian faith / Two eliptical tears 3/4 in ling [?] in front of left thigh.Another document gives addresses: Black Boy Hill, W.A. 17.2.1916 / 16.5.1916 / 17.8.1918 / Perth, W.A. 2.10.1918.

Another document, a Postcard "Particulars Of Article" gives his address as c/ J. SWANSON, Alice Springs [could not see date].

Chain of Ponds, S.A. [along the River Torrens].
When Walter married Mary he was living in Willowie aged 19 years a Labourer. His father is entered as James EAMER. The Melrose Wesleyan Church where Walter & Mary were married is situated at the foot of Mount Remarkable. Willowie is a small town east of Melrose - they are situated in Flinders Ranges, South Australia. The Witnesses to their Marriage were J. CROFT, Mailman and H. FULLER, Labourer, both were living in Melrose. [Copy of Cert. On File sent to me by Wendy CHAPMAN [nee. PRATT]].
Walter & Mary and their family experienced great hardship living in the areas around Quorn, South Australia and they decided to move to Western Australia with their family in the late 1890's during the gold-rush era, they settled in Nannine and were amongst the first early settlers within the Murchison Goldfields. Walter lived in South Australia 37 years.
Walter's Death Certificate states Father:- John EAMER / Mother:- Ethel BALCOMB. The Cert also states his place of Birth as Mt. Gambier, S.A. [Info from John G. EAMER/ Copy of Cert. received from him 29.10.2006].

Robert has looked into his Family History and although I have written to him he has never written back - a great disappopintment. I believe him to be the one that gave Maud THOMAS the information regarding James EAMER's Common-law-wife naming her as Ethel BALCOMBE when infact my researching revealed that she was either Eliza or Elizabeth BERRY, this from Birth & Death Certificates of her children by James.
Robert was living at:- 60 Emmett Road, Crafers 5152, Southern Australia [Tel: [08] 3394852] on the 2 July 1987. On the 12 February 1995 he was living at:- 7 Tanning Way, Woodvale 6026, Western Australia [Tel: 09-309 4086]. [per Marilyn DICKSON's letter to me dated 12.2.1995].
17.1.2004. Going into www.whitepages.com.au/wp/ on the Internet under W. A. Residential I found the Telephone Number of R. G. & J. E. EAMER listed as [08] 9309 4086] and presume that this is this Robert noting the previous telephone number I have for him. He is now living at 151 Woodvale Drive, Woodvale 6026, W.A. I presume that J. E. must be his wife and have entered her as J. E. [Unknown] on the Individual Chart.NOTE: There is another entry for R. G. & J. E. EAMER - address 55 Manchester Drive, Hocking 6065, W.A. - Telephone Number [08] 9206 1334 - could this be a business number!!

When Jane married Henry she married under the name of Jane EAMER. Jane must have been living in the area of Ealing to be married in St. Marys Church there. I have researched the 1871 Census of the area but cannot find Jane but have found Henry living in Sudbury, London. The Witnesses to the Marriage were George UNDERWOOD and Julia BELLINGHAM - I have no idea who these people were, probably friends.

James with Henry NASH on the 6th December 1847 stole a Ewe to the value of £1.00 belonging to Oliver KING the Elder at Husrt, Berkshire. After being arrested they were sent for Trial. At County Quarter Sessions, Abingdon, Berks on the 3rd January 1848 they both pleaded Not Guilty but the Verdict was Guilty and they were both sentenced to be Transported for Fifteen years. There was some doubt with James guilt, there were footsteps at the scene of the crime but no evidence that they belonged to James. Was in Reading Gaol, then Millbank, then Pentonville and finally at Portland, Dorset before being shipped to Australia with Henry aboard the "Hashemy" on the 19th July 1850. Arrived Freemantle [The Swan Colony] on the 25th October 1850. They were set to work on building the Freemantle Prison. Ticket Of Leave was granted to James on the 10th August 1851 and received a Conditional Pardon on the 23rd March 1856. He left Western Australia aboard the "Lochinuar" to South Australia on the 22nd June 1857. Sometime [cannot confirm when or where] he took a Common-law-Wife Eliza[beth] BERRY and children were born. They resided in the Talunga district and later settled at Chain Of Ponds. It appears that James had a drink problem and was admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital / Asylum during 1866 & 1867. James died at the hospital on the 16th May 1868 with General Paralysis aged 48 years [Death Cert says 40 years].NOTE:- Much researching info, copies of documents, newspaper reports, prison records etc on James is Filed in the James EAMOUR/EAMER Large Ring Binder - it fills the Binder. Have found more documentation on James [having been a Criminal] than any other person on my lineage.
James signed his name with an x. Later in Australia he learnt to sign his name.
When son Arthur was born, James and Eliza[beth] were living in Maidstone in the District of Talunga in Australia.
At the time of James death his address was Chain Of Ponds which is near Adelaide, South Australia. I have not been able to confirm this, but it is believed that Alcholocics were sent to Adelaide Hospital/Asylum at this time.
James is entered in the "Biographical Index Of South Australians 1836-1855" - Page 448. This book was published in 1986 to commemorate the 150th Jubilee of South Australia. [Copy held in the S.O.G. / Ref: AUA/SA/G10].
On the 1891 Census for Hurst, Berkshire [RG12/1001 Folio 66 Page 26] - living next door to one another were Gilbert KING and his brother Oliver KING who were connected with James' Trial. Gilbert [75] was "Farmer with Means" and Oliver [77] was "Living on his own Means". Their sisters were also "Living on her Means" and the three children of Olivers living with him and his wife were all single aged between 30 and 40. Were they happy, did they ever give a thought to James!

13/1/2006. From Website On Line www.genseek.net/cons.htm - details of Henry:-Convict No. 147 arrived at Freemantle, Swan River Colony, Australia with James on the "Hashemy" on the 25 Oct 1850. His Birth Date 1810. Married with 5 children. Labourer. Literate. C/E. Sentenced to 15 years with James in 1848 at Abingdon, Berks. Crime: Steal a sheep. Ticket Of Leave Granted 10 Aug 1851. Comments: To South Australia per "Guyon" 27 Apr 1856. [Copy from Website in EAMOUR File].
Henry seems to have made a quicker departure from W.A. than James did. After January 1864 Convicts were not allowed to leave W.A. for another Colony under a Ticket Of Leave and they were not granted a Pardon but had to serve their full sentence before they could leave the Colony.
Wonder what became of Henry - I doubt if I will research him.

476 Samuel Inglis born in Dunns Scotland was the first child of Samuel Inglis and Mary Robertson. He left Scotland with his new bride, Janet Duncan Knox, on the ship Omega on the 24th of May 1852 arriving in South Australia on the 24th of August 1852

Their first child Jane was born in Adelaide in 1853 and shortly afterwards they moved to Yankalilla where Samuel was a store keeper.
In 1857 he moved to McLaren Vale and was Miller there for a short time.
In 1860 he became the miller at The Tea Tree Gully flour mill.
In 1868 he moved to Adelaide and was engaged as a miller with Giles & Smith flour mill on West Terence until 1877.
During their stay in Adelaide they lived in Morney Street and Grattan Street.

In 1881 they moved from Adelaide to Red Hill and worked as a miller at the flour mill there. After the flour mill at Red Hill closed in 1881 he inherited the property of his uncle Anthony, as well as the post office and eating house at Elatina, which was the stopping place for the coach run from Hawker to Blinman.

Samuel spent the last few years of his life in this area as a sheep farmer and died in 1887 and is buried in the Blinman Cemetery. Janet his wife stayed with her family in this vicinity for sometime then move to Broken Hill with her son Alexander Duncan Inglis. She died at Broken Hill in March 1905 and is buried there

He was always known to the family as 'Miller Sam' as he followed the occupation of miller in South Australia that he had begun in Scotland

478 Sarah Wickham married William Joseph Sayers in 1836 in Hobart.
William Joseph Sayers (1812 - 1885) arrived in Hobart around 1834 with his father, Zachariah and 3 other siblings. I have his death certificate that says he was married twice. No details on first marriage only that there were 2 children. One dead and one living(Rosa?). He was born in Romford in 1812.
I have no documents to confirm his life between 1838 - 1862.
