  • Notes
    • m:1941 Perth WA
    • Was the manager of the WA government’s illuminite mine on the edge of the salt lake. After WW11 the WA government closed down the mine (CHANDLER had a population of around 105, with the mine as the sole employer) and MAT had to retrench everybody. MAVIS told me he cried for three days.

Our family moved to ZAMBIA (then NORTHERN RHODESIA) in 1953: MAT, a metallurgist, left the WA government to join an international mining company operating copper mines on the COPPER BELT, and we stayed there until January 1960 when we returned to Australia (MELBOURNE). I think for Anglo American, something to do with bricks! MAT moved us back to Africa, this time Johannesburg in South Africa, when he joined Rio Tinto.
