WILLOWS Grocery Store - 95 Mundy St., Bendigo, Victoria

Who are the subjects? Here is an attempt to identify them.

By blowing up the photo it would appear that the woman second from the Left is clearly the oldest, by far, more than likely Eleanor, and on closer inspection it is not too hard to perceive that she is possibly pregnant.

For the young lady on her right (who is clearly maturing) to be her eldest, Lucy, the youngest she can be is probably 13, and since there was 2yrs between each of the children (what planning) my guess of the identities of the group are:

L-R Lucy WILLOWS (13yrs); Mother Eleanor WILLOWS (nee SPENCER) 46yrs and pregnant with her last, John WILLOWS (-1 mth); Carrie WILLOWS (5yrs); Norman WILLOWS (9yrs) with Alice Easter WILLOWS (11yrs) on the far right.

Missing from the photo is Ernest, who was only about 18 months or so and most likely did not feature. The other person missing is Maud WILLOWS (7yrs).

The date of the photo is probably June, 1895, as John WILLOWS was born in August of the year.

Another way to look at it is knowing that the youngest daughter of Eleanor was Carrie WILLOWS and for Lucy to be a teenager Carrie must have been 5yrs, and looking at the photo the young girl at the RH of Eleanor is about that age. That young girl could not be any of the other daughters or the young lady standing on the far Left could not be as mature as she appears.

So by looking at it from two different angles I still place the photo at 1895, and if the pregnancy theory is correct then it must be very close to June of 1895.

But where is Maud? Notice the space between young Carrie (3rd from the left) and Norman (4th from the left). It doesnt take too much of a leap to imagine that just before this photo was taken that space was filled with another person standing in line with the others.

And if we go just one step further, who is that little girl on the extreme left of the picture, peering in as if to stay out of the photo. Could it be Maud who bolted at the very last moment (remember in those days setting up a shot was a tiresome event) and ran over to be by the side of maybe one of her Aunties (Alice, Sarah or even Caroline - Eleanor's sisters-in-law).

Just could be .....?
